What Kind of Seeds Are We Sowing?
The ice caps are melting. The urban heat island effect is spreading.
Sea levels are rising, and small islands are disappearing.
In the United States, hailstorms fall during scorching heat waves.
Nature’s Warning Signs
2001: Typhoon Nari brought the worst flooding to Taipei in a century.
2002: Taiwan experienced its hottest summer in 50 years, leaving the "Rain Port" of Keelung without water for six months.
2003: Typhoon Dujuan devastated southern Taiwan while only temporarily easing the water crisis in the north.
2004: Typhoon Aere caused torrential rains, leading to over two weeks of water outages in Taoyuan. The destructive power of debris flows is terrifying.
Earth is Ill
What do these anomalies represent?
The Earth is ill—gravely ill. Mother Nature is striking back with overwhelming force.
The South Asian Tsunami claimed over 200,000 lives in an instant.
We have been too selfish, gambling away the environment our descendants depend on for the sake of economic gain.
Life has existed on Earth for 3.8 billion years, yet in just 30 short years, we have depleted one-third of its natural resources.
By 2025, 3.7 billion people worldwide will lack access to clean drinking water.
A Responsibility for Us All
Can our future generations still enjoy the blessings of nature as our ancestors did?
The answer depends on our collective effort.
Let us begin by improving our urban ecological environments.
Let the Earth breathe again.
Give our next generation a healthy planet.
This is not the responsibility of a single nation or organization.
It is a responsibility shared by every one of us.
